Questions and Answers about Sedation Dentistry

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a medical procedure of inducing different medication levels to make the patient feel relaxed and comfortable during the dental process.

What Levels of Sedations Are There?

There are four levels of Sedation, they include:

  1. General Anesthesia – in this Sedation level, the patient is usually totally unconscious when the procedure is ongoing.
  2. Minimal Sedation – the patient is awake but comfortable and relaxed.
  3. Deep Sedation – the patient usually is at the edge of consciousness but can be awakened if need be.
  4. Moderate Sedation or Conscious Sedation – when speaking, the patient might slur their words but hardly recall anything concerning the procedure.

How Is Sedation Dentistry Administered?

The common types of Sedation include:

  • Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation ranges from minimal to moderate as per the dose you are given. A Halcion pill will be administered in minimal Sedation that causes drowsiness but will be awake, taken an hour before the procedure starts. Increased dosage leads to moderate Sedation that makes you dizzy to the extent of sleeping but can be awakened by gentle tapping or shake.

  • General Anesthesia and Deep Sedation

The medication administered during this procedure causes total sleep or unconsciousness. The patient can only be awake after the process is reversed by medication or the anesthesia’s effect wears off.

  • Inhaled Minimal Sedation

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas with a combination of oxygen is used in the procedure by breathing in through a nose mask. The doctor can regulate the amount of laughing gas the patient inhales. The procedure is useful, and you can drive or cycle yourself home after.

  • IV Moderate Sedation

A sedative drug is administered through a vein injection for its effective functioning. The health officer can perpetually manage the Sedation.

What Candidacy Does Sedation Dentistry Have?

Sedation dentistry applies to people with the following experiences:

  1. When you cannot be still in the dentist’s chair.
  2. When there is much dental work to be accomplished.
  3. When your teeth’ sensitivity is too high.
  4. When you experience a low pain threshold.
  5. When you have a poor gag reflex.

Patients with other health issues such as having obstructive sleep apnea or obesity need to discuss with the doctor before the procedure to avoid further complications from the anesthesia used.
